He apparently misunderstood; the idea isn't for it to act as a credit card that mounts charges, but an allotment of prepaid meals per week; use one meal for a friend, you have one less for yourself. You won't and can't add meals to the card per week...I wouldn't go for the "dining dollars" scheme, though. It definitely, obviously would cost students more $/ounce, so to speak. You lose the effective cost benefit of a cafeteria over restaurants, and the minor flexibility just appeals to modern kids' spoiled nature.

I’m really surprised he kept pushing his willingness to change policy, though I’m unimpressed by his argument against friends using meal plans. So therefore perhaps its better to just do nothing. But what would happen? The garden would go out of control! Is it futile to cut grass when it grows? No! Why? Because even though it will grow again you can at least control it and keep the garden from getting too out of control.
Is it futile to wage a war on drugs and terror? No, because even though there will be more drugs, doing nothing would lead to world out of control. I think you have a wrong view of the world.

If I may use your thinking in an analogy of a gardner:

Your thinking is grass will always grow, cutting it down is futile because there will an “influx” of grass growth. I wrote a very lengthy research paper on Iraq and what most people do not know is that on a daily basis MORE civilians died under Saddam than under the war. In fact, Saddam in one day killed twice as many civilians than in the war combined. Since the rate of civilians death as decreased since the war, U.S intervention has actually saved lives. Also most of the civilian deaths are not a result of the U.S but of SHiite and Sunni violence, which was going on long before the U.S intervened. A recent poll came out, which you wont hear about in the liberal media, that most Iraqis feel their lives are now better because of the intervention of the U.S. Again I can go into much more detail and list facts and studies etc. But from a statistical point of view, U.S intervention has REDUCED civilian deaths. Finally, just because there will always be drugs doesnt mean a war on it is futile. Thats like saying just because my garden will always grow weeds I shouldnt do anything to get rid of them. That war on drugs was not futile for my friends family who were rescued from the grips of drug dealers that controlled their neighborhood with force and threats. They now have a safer life because the war on drugs eliminated a drug trade in that neighborhood and put dealers in jail. It may be futile for you but not for them.

Im not going to go into everything you mentioned but you cite civilian deaths. I’d argue that not engaging in such a task would be immoral. Is this in reference to Iraq or Afghanistan? I would like to read more of an elaboration from you on this. Partly because I don't want to make an assumption on your behalf. An estimated 95,000-103,000 civilians have died thus far in Iraq alone since our entrance into the Iraqi conflict. This isn't to say every death was at fault of the US, I'm sure many had to do with insurgent efforts against the US. I'd like to read your thoughts on this matter? I think it's very important to know other's ideals with such an instance. I'd like to leave you with a quote from Howard Zinn: "We must understand the pain and anguish that people feel. We can understand, too, the cry for punishment and revenge. But we mustn't let that immediate emotional reaction govern what we do, which should be based on a thoughtful assessment of how we can prevent further violence..whether by terrorists or governments"Fiftly, to say that the war on drugs is futile is to do a grave disservice to all the neighborhoods and people that have been rescued from the grip that drugs has on society. Shame on you.Shame on me? Do you really think there will be a day when the US government will say "we've gotten all the terrorists"? I'm relating to the war on terrorism to the war on drugs because no matter what effort is made, it will not stop the influx of such uncontrollable outside variables. I think your view of the world is quite skewed if you don't think the war on drugs is futile. No matter what the DEA does there will always be a massive influx of narcotics coming into this country and that's something you need to realize. That however, is besides the point.I feel like we're having a good discussion here, and I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

what is immoral about bringing to justice criminals and hindering their ability to attack innocent people? What twisted logic leads you to affirm that because it is not a state "we technically can't declare war on them"? I challenge you to open a history book and to learn that not every war was fought against a "state" nor are wars limited to such. Second of all, Bush never recognized Al-Qaida as a state nor Bin-Laden as a president. Third of all, what is immoral about bringing to justice criminals and hindering their ability to attack innocent people? I'd argue that not engaging in such a task would be immoral. Fourth of all, please tell me the article in the constitution that makes such an endeavor unconstitutional. Im a law student and I can assure you that you have made a fool of yourself. Fiftly, to say that the war on drugs is futile is to do a grave disservice to all the neighborhoods and people that have been rescued from the grip that drugs has on society. Shame on you. Lastly, the U.S isn't governing anybody, last time I checked Iraq and Afghanistan have their own government, leaders, and elections. Something they never had prior. Guiora was adamant that the United States, “cannot defeat terrorism, we can only manage or minimize its effectiveness.”It's nice to see someone else recognize this logic. Declaring a war on terrorism is both immoral and unconstitutional. I have huge problem with a "war on terrorism" and that is that I think it's equally as futile as a "war on drugs". I think everyday we occupy someone else's land, governing their people, we create a new terrorist everyday. I think the United States really needs to focus on our foreign policy more.

Well first of all, Al-Qaida is not a state (therefore we cannot technically declare war on them) and Bin-Laden is not the president, but kudos to you President Bush for internationally recognizing them both.
